Speedboat Racing was in Art Asburys blood. However, the Dwight native had no thoughts of racing boats competitively when he returned home from the second World War, and resumed working with his parents, who had started operating a tourist resort at Oxtongue Lake. He had said just three years ago it was a bad debt, that got him started racing in the first place. Art was working at a local marina, refinishing boats. This one particular man could not pay, so he gave Art an outboard engine as security. He fixed it and sold it to this other fellow, who in turn asked Art to race it for him…this other fellow turned out to be Art Hatch, who formed the Costa Lotta racing team and asked Art to join. It was then in 1948 when he started his illustrious racing career by winning his first race in organized competition at the CNE in the Canadian National Championships in Toronto. But it was the period between 1957-65 when Art put his name on the world speedboat racing map. In 1957 the Supertest Racing Team approached him, and persuaded him to become their Crew Chief . Driving the MISS SUPERTEST II on November 1, he set the world record in the straightaway, unlimited class of 184.54 MPH at Long Beach, Picton, Ontario. He was later awarded the World Medal of Honour from the Union for International Motorboating in Ghent, Belgium. He went on to set set two more world speed records, 3 Canadian and 1 American record while driving for Aubert Brillard of Rimouski, Quebec from 1962-65. Art was also made a member of the American Marine Racing Hall of Fame in 1964.
