In1987, the Hawks had a record of 16 wins and only four losses. Finishing the regular season in first place having scored a league leading 303 goals in 20 games. Huntsville had three players in the top five in scoring in the Provincial Eastern Division. With Captain Gus Liadis leading the league with 136 points on 36 goals and 100 assists. Gus was the premier play maker in the league. Dave Kennedy was second in league scoring with 93 points and Mike Fisher was fifth with 79 points including 50 goals…Mike did all that in only 15 games played.
In the first round of the playoffs, the Hawks beat Scarborough 4 games to none, and Peterborough 4 games to 3, to win the eastern Ontario championship, which qualified the Hawks a berth in the Founders Cup.
In the Ontario finals, Huntsville ran up against a red hot Mississauga team, led by a kid named John Tavares and lost out in four games.
During the playoffs, Captain Gus Liadis once again led the team in scoring with 76 points in 14 games. Mike Fisher was second with 56 points including 30 goals in only 12 games and Dave Kennedy was third in team scoring with 52 points.
And at the Founders Cup the Hawks found themselves in the Bronze Medal game against Edmonton. That game, and the bronze medal was decided with no time left in the first overtime period when Mike Fisher scored on a penalty shot to win the game 21-20.
The Hawks were inducted into the HUNTSVILLE SPORTS HALL OF FAME IN THE TEAM CATEGORY IN 2017.
