Andy Longpre had a stellar high school and university wrestling career. During his years at Huntsville High School (1971-6) he won championships at OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations), the Canadian Junior Open, the Canada Summer Games and the Canada Winter Games. He then moved on to the University of Guelph (1977-81) where he wrestled for the varsity Gryphons. He won two OUAA (Ontario University Athletics Association) championships (1977 &1978) and a silver medal (1980) and two CIAU (Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union) championships (1977 &1978) and a silver medal (1980). He was named the CIAU’s Most Outstanding Wrestler in 1979 losing only two of 40 matches. He was the team captain in 1979 and assistant coach in 1981. At the apparent height of his career, when his coach believed him to be highly favoured to win the national open championship, Andy decided to retire from wrestling. He was inducted into the the Huntsville Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the University of Guelph Hall of Fame in 2000.
