Summer days and summer nights for ball fans in Huntsville tended to center around the old arena grounds where the Summit Center is now located. The slap of the fastball into a leather catcher’s mitt, and horsehide strings, a real wood bat, were the true delights of those times. Most often the author of those delights was Bob McCulley, affectionately known to his teammates and fans as “McCOOL” Bob was dominant pitcher in the Muskoka Parry Sound Fastball league leading his Huntsville Merchants to Championships from 1959 thru 1964. His bat also contributed to the team’s success. Bob also had a significant influence on Minor Ball, and the Institution of fastball under the lights. When the facilities became necessary, Bob was part of a group that led to the creation of what is now known as The McCulley-Roberston Ball Diamonds. “McCOOL”, helped guarantee that ball is readily available for all boys and girls and men and women throughout the many years to come
