In 1993, Don McCormick decided to enter the national triathlon team qualifying race in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. Placing second, Don qualified for the national team and the world championships in Manchester, England. At the world championships, McCormick finished in the middle of the pack. Later that year in a World Cup race held in Huntsville, McCormick had a third-place finish. In 1994, Don McCormick won the national team qualifying race and again competed at the world championships in New Zealand. In 1996 Don McCormick’s hard work started to pay off. He won the Ontario championship, the Subaru sprint triathlon series, stood second in both the long course series, and the national duathlon championships, and won the national triathlon championship in his age group. Qualifying for the national team again, Don McCormick placed 13th at the world championships in Cleveland. 1997 was McCormick’s last year of serious competition. He won every race he entered in the Subaru series and qualified once again for the national team and the world championships in Perth, Australia again finishing 13th in the world for a second time. Retiring from competition, Don McCormick continues work hard to establish Huntsville and Lake of Bays as a world destination for triathlon and Ironman events.
