You didn’t have to know Mike Greaves well to know he was a big sports fan. He was a stellar lacrosse player in his day and played baseball – he was on the 1964 Huntsville Merchants team. If you ever had questions about anything to do with Huntsville, its history, community or anyone’s particular accomplishments, Mike Greaves would rhyme off exactly what you needed to know at the drop of a hat. He was a founder of the Huntsville Sports Hall of Fame. Mike was a key member of the Sportrec Foundation, a program that helped generate funds for various sporting organizations in town, as well as the hospital foundation and the library. In the early ’90s Greaves decided to form the Huntsville Sports Hall of Fame, he wanted very much to recognize the sporting heroes in the community and give them their moment in the sun. Greaves was also well known for his columns that he penned weekly for The Forester. What really resonated with most people were the columns he wrote about local personalities, past and present. He could always be counted on to eulogize a person’s contribution to the community. He was Huntsville’s keeper of history.
