Beginning in the CanSkate program under the watchful eye of Hunsville figure skating coach Marilyn Leigh, Shannon Meunier began her skating career at the age of three. Shannon improved to a level that required private lessons. Beginning first with coach Leigh then eventually on to the Mariposa School of Skating under the watchful eye of legendary coach Doug Leigh. The year 1991 was Shannon’s greatest year of accomplishment in figure skating. Qualifying for the Canada Winter Games in Charlottetown, PEI, and competing against skaters considerably older, the then 11 year-old Shannon Meunier won the gold medal in figure skating! AS a 12 year-old Shannon Meunier completed her gold freeskate test, the youngest skater in Huntsville to ever complete all of the freeskate tests. In 1992 Shannon was awarded the George Snowden award as Huntsville’s Female Athlete of the Year. Shannon Meunier retired from competitive skating as a teenager but eventually returned to her roots as the Huntsville Figure Skating Club as a coach. Shannon has complete her gold skills and gold dance tests to obtain her triple test and begun the NCCP coaching program.
